In November 2015, Congress enacted legislation requiring federal agencies to adjust their civil penalties to account for inflation. The new penalties took effect after August 1, 2016 and increased at the beginning of 2017 and now again at the beginning of 2018. Establishments with 250 or more employees in industries covered by the recordkeeping regulation, as well as establishments with 20-249 employees that are classified in certain industries with historically high rates of occupational injuries and illnesses may now begin electronically submitting the 2017 data. The deadline for covered establishments to electronically submit 2017 workplace injury and illness information to OSHA is July 1, 2018. Beginning in 2019 and every year thereafter, the information must be submitted to OSHA by March 2nd. The requirement to provide injury and illness information to OSHA should not be confused with the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ (BLS) Annual Survey, a survey some companies receive requesting work-related injury and illness information. Opioid addiction often starts in the family medicine cabinet, a new study warns. If someone is taking prescription opioids for pain, such as OxyContin, it’s more likely that others living in the home will also get an opioid prescription, the researchers found. “Prescription opioid use may spread within households, and patients may need to consider the risks to other family members,” said lead researcher Marissa Seamans. Winter is coming, and prepping workers for cold temperatures should start well before the first snowflake falls. Proper PPE should include multiple layers of protection, both moisture-wicking and wind-resistant, as well as gloves and hard hat liners. Dressing improperly, wetness/dampness and preexisting conditions can contribute to cold stress and hypothermia, a condition that occurs when the body’s temperature begins to fall to dangerous levels, resulting in tissue damage and even death. OSHA has delayed until Dec. 15 the compliance date for employers to electronically submit injury and illness data. The agency’s final rule is scheduled to be published in the Nov. 24 Federal Register. The delay allows “affected employers additional time to become familiar with a new electronic reporting system,” OSHA states in a Nov. 22 press release. Read the full article >>>
President Donald Trump on Oct. 27 nominated Scott Mugno, vice president of safety, sustainability and vehicle maintenance at FedEx Ground, to lead OSHA as the assistant secretary of labor. If confirmed, Mugno would take over from Loren Sweatt, who has served as acting assistant secretary of labor since July 24.
